A Reddit user named Desmontei has uniquely modernized his 2001 Audi A4 (B5) sedan. He integrated a TicWatch Pro 3 smartwatch into the gear shifter, bringing a technological innovation to the interior, reports Ixbt.com. reports .
To execute this project, the author 3D-printed a custom housing. The watch's original casing was removed, and its OLED screen and motherboard were placed inside the new shifter. The device draws power directly from the car's 12-volt electrical system.
For the software, a custom app was developed for the WearOS operating system. The current gear position is determined using the watch's internal accelerometer and gyroscope sensors based on the shifter's tilt. A dynamic calibration algorithm was implemented to prevent errors caused by road bumps.
The smart shifter not only displays the gear but also acts as a media controller for the Spotify app. The driver can switch or pause music via swipes on the screen, allowing for audio system control without distraction while driving.
The project author plans to manufacture the housing from more durable ABS or PETG plastics in the future and display telemetry data such as engine RPM and temperature via an OBD2 scanner.
