Hurrem Sultan: The Powerful Woman of the Ottoman Empire

Hurrem Sultan (real name: Roxelana Alexandra Anastasia Gavrionali Lisovska) was born in 1502 in Ukraine. In the 1520s, she was brought to the Ottoman Empire and became the wife of Suleiman. In her early years, although not considered traditionally beautiful, Hurrem captivated Sultan Suleiman with her intelligence, charm, and vivaciousness. She converted to Islam and took the name Hurrem.

Hurrem Sultan had eight children: seven sons and one daughter. Her eldest son, Prince Mehmed, passed away at the age of 22 in 1543 due to smallpox. Her daughter, Mihrimah Sultan, who was deeply beloved, married Rustem Pasha. Selim, her fourth child, ascended to the throne after Suleiman.

Hurrem Sultan holds a significant place in history. She was influential not only in the political life of the Ottoman Empire but also contributed greatly to its cultural development. Her children, especially Selim and Mihrimah Sultan, left an indelible mark on Ottoman history.
