Mihrimah Sultan: A Powerful Queen of the Ottoman Empire
Mihrimah Sultan (March 21, 1522 – January 25, 1578) was the daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent (Suleiman I) and his favorite wife, Hurrem Sultan. Mihrimah, one of the most influential and powerful women in Ottoman history, had a name that, in its forms Mihrimah or Mihruma, means “Sun and Moon.”
Mihrimah Sultan was born in 1522 in Constantinople. She received a good education and developed her skills in oratory and politics. In 1539, she married Rustem Pasha, who served as the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire and wielded significant political influence.
Mihrimah Sultan’s political influence extended beyond domestic affairs to have considerable significance in international politics as well. Her political strategies, particularly those connected to the execution of Prince Mustafa, were notable. Additionally, Mihrimah was a patron of major architectural projects, including the construction of the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque, designed by the renowned architect Mimar Sinan.
Mihrimah Sultan passed away in 1578 and was buried next to Suleiman I. Her impact and legacy remain significant not only in the history of the Ottoman Empire but in world history as well.
