Number of children born out of wedlock in Europe is rising sharply

According to Eurostat data, 41% of children born in the European Union in 2024 were born to unmarried parents. In seven member states, more than half of all children were born outside of marriage.

The highest rates were recorded in Bulgaria (62%), France (60%), and Portugal (59%). The lowest rates were observed in Greece (10%), Hungary (24%), and Croatia (26%). Between 2004 and 2024, births outside of marriage increased in 18 countries and decreased in only 4.

Europe's population has reached 451 million

As of January 1, 2025, the European Union population reached 451 million, an increase of nearly 1 million compared to the previous year. Germany has the largest population at 84 million, accounting for 19% of the EU total.

France has 69 million, Italy 59 million, Spain 49 million, and Poland 36 million residents. These five countries account for 66% of Europe's population.

Europe's population is aging

Data shows the median age of the EU population rose from 39.6 years in 2005 to 44.9 years in 2025. Italy has the highest median age at 49.1, while Ireland has the lowest at 39.6.

Experts attribute this to demographic shifts in Europe, declining marriage rates, and an aging population.
