Starlink Mobile aims to compete with traditional mobile networks

SpaceX aims to transform Starlink satellite communication from a mere "emergency solution" into a full-fledged alternative to traditional mobile networks. According to the company's pre-IPO documents, the focus is on direct-to-smartphone technology, which connects standard smartphones directly to satellites without special equipment. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .

Currently, Starlink Mobile is primarily used for messaging and basic connectivity in areas without operator coverage. However, SpaceX believes that over time, the quality of satellite communication will match terrestrial mobile networks, even in urban environments. To achieve this, the company is actively expanding its satellite constellation and enhancing its radio frequency capabilities.

Specifically, SpaceX plans to utilize spectrum from the American company EchoStar to improve connection stability and speed. Company representatives state that as product features improve, they will compete to ensure customers prefer Starlink services, regardless of whether they are in rural, suburban, or metropolitan areas.

For now, telecommunications giants, including SpaceX partner T-Mobile, view satellite connectivity only as an add-on option for premium plans. T-Mobile executive Srini Gopalan noted in May that satellite traffic accounted for only 0.0002 percent of total network volume. Nevertheless, SpaceX is betting that in a few years, satellites will become as common a communication tool as standard base stations.
