Historic surgery performed on pregnant woman without cutting her abdomen

In Israel, medical practice has risen to a new level — doctors at the Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva succeeded for the first time in performing a complex operation on a pregnant woman without opening the abdominal cavity. Specialists used a robotic laparoscopic method to save the life of 23-year-old Tsophia Leibovich.

The woman, at 32 weeks of pregnancy, was urgently hospitalized. Usually, in such a situation, an open surgery is performed, which can cause premature birth, but the doctors chose a modern, low-blood-loss method to reduce the risk. The procedure performed by a robot through small incisions minimized the danger.

The operation was successful — Tsophia continued her pregnancy and a few weeks later gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Experts emphasize that such a technology has been applied for the first time in late-term pregnancy and may allow saving the lives of thousands of women in the future.
