9 Police Officers Sentenced to Death in India: Brutal Murder of Father and Son

In India, 9 police officers were sentenced to death for the 2020 death of a father and son in custody. BBC reported this.

58-year-old P. Jeyaraj and his 38-year-old son Beniks violated quarantine rules during the coronavirus pandemic by not closing their mobile phone store. After being arrested, they died in custody a few days later.

\"This is an outright abuse of power,\" the judge said.

The two men were stripped and brutally beaten in front of each other.

\"They did this with the intent to kill. They attacked unarmed people. They cannot be forgiven. No lighter punishment should be given based on their age or family situation. They are all educated people,\" the judge emphasized.

As a result of the brutal murder of the father and son, ten police officers were arrested, but one of the accused died of COVID-19 in 2020.

This incident led to protests in Tamil Nadu state. Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi and Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan, among others, demanded justice for the father and son on social media.

This incident brought the issue of police violence back to the forefront in India. According to human rights defenders, hundreds of people die in custody every year. They claim that detainees are subjected to torture and pressure to extract confessions from them. In early 2026, UN experts called on India to modernize its police system in line with international human rights standards.
