Trump's political approval rating hits record low

Unexpected and sensational developments are being observed in the overseas political arena. According to the latest social survey results from the Newsweek research center 'American Research Group' published by the magazine, U.S. President Donald Trump's popularity among the public has fallen to its lowest point during his two-term presidency.

Only 31 percent of Americans participating in these analyses expressed support (approval) for the White House leader's policies, while a full 64 percent stated they have a negative attitude toward him. For comparison, in April of this year, these figures were 32 percent and 63 percent, respectively.

Chain of social polls: Voters turning away from Trump

The decline in the White House leader's rating is being confirmed unanimously not only by one center but also by other leading U.S. media and analytical companies.

In particular, the details of other major polls published in May are as follows:

  • SSRS and CNN poll: Of the respondents, 65 percent said they were completely dissatisfied with the current President's performance, while only 35 percent expressed approval. The negative indicator has increased by another percentage point compared to last month.

  • The Economist analysis: According to May calculations, while 37 percent of Americans approved of Trump's work, 57 percent voted against him.

Of particular note, Reuters/Ipsos observed a slightly different trend in its latest research. According to it, 35 percent of those surveyed approved of the president's performance, while 63 percent were dissatisfied. Given that Trump's support fell to an all-time low (34 percent) in April, Americans' confidence in him rose by only one percent in May. However, Reuters analysts still call this situation a crisis in the general context. Because Donald Trump began his second presidential term in January 2025 with a much higher 42 percent approval rating vote of confidence.

Failed economic policy and internal discontent

The main factor distancing citizens from Trump was also revealed in all these influential social polls. It turns out that today, Americans' dissatisfaction with the economic policy, inflation, and rising prices being pursued by the White House leader is growing more rapidly than ever.

Most alarmingly, affection for him is cooling not only among the general public but also among the die-hard supporters of the Republican Party, which has been Trump's own pillar of support. According to statistics provided by Reuters/Ipsos:

  • In the early days of the second term (beginning of 2025), a full 91 percent of Republican voters recognized Trump;

  • By April of this year, this figure had dropped to 82 percent; In the latest poll in May, only

  • 79 percent of registered Republicans stated they support their leader. Midterm elections are approaching: Who will hold Congress?

In November of this year, an important political event that will determine the country's fate—midterm elections for Congress—will take place in the United States. Following these public voting processes, it will be clarified whether Republicans can maintain their majority in both chambers of Congress (Senate and House of Representatives) or not.

Janet Hoffman, a well-known political consultant for the Republican Party, assessed this complex political situation in a special interview with Reuters:

“It is very difficult to predict exactly how the decline in Donald Trump's rating will affect the outcome of the midterm elections in the fall. But one thing should not be forgotten: the absolute majority of Republican voters remain loyal to their leader. An 80 percent support level within the party is still a very large and significant number in the political arena,” the expert emphasized.

Do you think the American people's dissatisfaction with Donald Trump's economic policy could lead to the Republican Party's defeat in the upcoming midterm elections?
