Meta to transition 7,000 employees to artificial intelligence departments

Intense competition in the tech world is forcing major corporations to fundamentally rethink their work styles. In particular, the founder of the popular Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp networks, Meta has begun revolutionary changes in its operations. According to reports from influential publications The New York Times and Bloomberg citing internal company documents, the corporation has decided to move 7,000 employees to new positions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).

Lean management and four new departments

Meta's leadership is moving to a new organizational structure to work more quickly and efficiently. From now on, the management system will be much "leaner and more agile," with a focus on organizing work based on small teams. This is expected to increase labor productivity several times over.

On May 18 of this year, the company's Chief People Officer, Janelle Gale, sent a special memo to employees. According to it, specialists transitioning to new roles will be distributed into four major new departments. The main goal of these departments will be to create modern AI-based tools and new applications that simplify our daily lives.

Mark Zuckerberg's multi-billion dollar bet

Bloomberg experts note that for Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg, AI technology is no longer just a trend, but the company's primary strategic priority. To maintain industry leadership, the company is investing hundreds of billions of dollars in developing Large Language Models (LLMs), attracting top talent, and building the necessary infrastructure.

Both restructuring and mass layoffs

However, the transition to the new system may not be pleasant for all employees. Reuters analysis from April suggests that Meta is expected to begin the first phase of its mass layoff program planned for 2026 on May 20. According to insider information, the company plans to lay off approximately 10 percent of its total workforce, or nearly 8,000 employees.

For context, as of the end of 2025, more than 78,000 people were employed by the Meta empire worldwide. Such drastic changes are clear evidence of how quickly the era of artificial intelligence is entering the IT world and replacing traditional jobs.

In your opinion, how much will Meta's heavy emphasis on artificial intelligence change social networks in the near future?
