US Department of Justice Bans Audit of Donald Trump's Taxes

A significant event causing major stir and debate on the US political scene has occurred. The US Department of Justice has officially banned the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) from re-auditing the tax returns filed by incumbent President Donald Trump and his family members over the past years.

This sensational decision was reached as part of a settlement regarding a major lawsuit filed by Donald Trump against the IRS following the illegal leak of his tax information to the media. It is worth noting that Trump had been seeking $10 billion in private damages from the government agency in this lawsuit.

A fund will be established and the President will receive an apology

Influential CNN reported that the Department of Justice initially proposed a remarkable solution to resolve the legal dispute peacefully. According to it, to provide financial support to Trump supporters who faced illegal persecution and pressure due to their political views during the previous (Joe Biden) administration, a special compensation fund of $1.8 billion will be established.

Also, under the terms of the agreement, a formal apology will be issued to Donald Trump on behalf of the US government, but no direct cash payments will be made to him.

According to documents published on the official website of the Department of Justice, the US government is dropping all tax claims against Donald Trump and is "permanently waiving the right to file any type of legal claim again" on this matter in the future. Officials clarified that this ban applies only to reports from previous years, and new tax returns filed by Trump and his family in the future may still be subject to legal oversight.

Opposition's anger: "This is pure corruption!"

This White House decision was met with sharp criticism from Democratic Party representatives. In particular, prominent Democratic Congressman Richard Neal, who chairs the House Ways and Means Committee, openly labeled the decision to declare Trump's financial documents immune as "systemic corruption" and condemned it harshly.

For context, it should be noted that Donald Trump consistently refused to disclose his income and tax returns to the public during his first campaign and after taking office. He explained this by citing long-term financial audits of his firms. As a result, Trump became the first head of state in US history since the early 1970s to hide his tax information.

How was the data leaked?

The incumbent President's lawsuit against the IRS was filed in January of this year. This was prompted by the leak of confidential tax documents from Trump's first term (2018–2020) to the American press.

It turned out that these highly confidential details were secretly provided to major newspapers by then-IRS employee Charles Littlejohn. As a result of the rule of law, in 2024, the former employee was found guilty of illegally distributing state and private information and sentenced to five years in prison. Thus, the major political debate that had been ongoing for several years ended with a victory for Trump.

Do you think this decision by the US Department of Justice will further intensify the political struggle between the two major parties (Democrats and Republicans) in the country?
