The Untold Truth Behind Kidnapping, Caucasian Style

Released in 1966, Kidnapping, Caucasian Style immediately became one of the most popular films in Soviet cinema. It was later included in the list of the 100 best films in the history of Russian and Soviet cinema and is recognized as one of the greatest Soviet comedies. Today, it is hard to imagine that this legendary film might never have been made, as its fate was once in jeopardy due to a decision by Yuri Nikulin.
In 1971, at his jubilee, the famous satirical writer and screenwriter Yakov Kostyukovsky recalled an unexpected story related to the film.
He stated that the script for the new comedy had already been approved and the actors were almost selected. Leonid Gaidai wanted to see the famous trio—Nikulin, Georgy Vitsin, and Yevgeny Morgunov—in the film again. While two actors agreed, Nikulin hesitated.

The actor believed that another film featuring the same trio might not be interesting to the audience. He noted that even in the circus, every season needs something new, otherwise, people get bored quickly. Nikulin felt that the trio's peak had ended with Operation Y and Shurik's Other Adventures.
After that, Gaidai had a long personal conversation with Nikulin. The director tried to convince him that the trio could still surprise the audience. After several hours of discussion, Nikulin decided to read the script one more time.
Later, it was said that one of the factors that encouraged the actor to participate was the opportunity to work with the young actress Natalya Varley. Nikulin spoke warmly of Varley and supported her.

Earlier, Gaidai had planned to cast Larisa Golubkina as Nina. However, Varley was eventually chosen, and she expressed her readiness to perform all the complex stunts herself.
As a result, Kidnapping, Caucasian Style was a huge success. Natalya Varley became famous throughout the country, and the legendary trio won the hearts of fans once again in a new light. The film even surpassed the box office results of Operation Y.
Nina Grebeshkova also appeared in the film. Although she played the role of a nurse in a psychiatric ward, this character did not bring her great fame.
