Lewandowski confirms Barcelona asked him not to score

Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski commented on the club’s controversial request. The Blaugrana’s management, at the end of the 2022/23 season when the team had already secured the La Liga title early, asked him not to score. The reason was that if the Polish footballer went past the 25-goal mark, Barça would have had to pay Bayern a bonus. The forward heeded the request and stopped at 23 goals. “There are things I don’t want to talk about. I respect Barcelona and all its employees. I was aware of the situation. It all came down to the bonus issue; at that time every euro mattered for the club. For me it wouldn’t have changed anything anyway, so it wasn’t a problem, but I always thought: should I score or not,” Barca Universal quotes the 37-year-old as saying. Robert Lewandowski joined Barcelona from Bayern in the summer of 2022.
