Former referee claims Musso episode should have been a penalty

A controversial episode in the Champions League quarter-final second leg between Atletico Madrid and Barcelona remains at the center of football discussions. Atletico lost the match 1:2 but advanced to the next stage with an aggregate score of 3:2.

During the game, Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez was injured after colliding with opponent goalkeeper Juan Musso while competing for the ball. This episode later sparked significant debate as a controversial situation.

Former referee Andujar Oliver expressed his opinion on the matter, emphasizing that the situation should clearly have been a penalty. According to him, regardless of whether there was intent in the goalkeeper's action, he committed a foul against the opponent.

Oliver noted, "Regardless of whether Musso had bad intentions or not, this is a penalty. The goalkeeper came forward and caused a direct collision while stopping the opponent."

This statement further intensifies current discussions in European football regarding refereeing decisions and the effectiveness of the VAR system.
