New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani engages with citizens via Twitch

New York's 112th Mayor Zohran Mamdani understands that the internet is the most effective way to connect with young voters. Now, he is taking this strategy to a new level. According to Polygon, Mamdani has launched a series of regular live streams on Twitch called “Talk with the People.” As part of this project, the mayor answers users' questions directly via chat. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .

These broadcasts are streamed simultaneously not only on Twitch but also on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Bluesky. This step reflects the changing relationship between politics and the internet. Today, the younger generation consumes political information more through streamers, podcasts, and social media activists than through traditional media.

In recent years, Twitch has evolved from a space for gamers into a hub for real-time political discussion. For example, in 2020, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez streamed the game Among Us on the platform to encourage youth to vote. In his statement, Mamdani emphasized that this project opens a direct line of communication between the government and the people, especially the long-overlooked younger generation.

Mamdani compares this initiative to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s famous “fireside chats.” Just as Roosevelt utilized the power of radio in his time, Mamdani aims to bridge the gap between government and the public through modern technology. The mayor's total social media following currently exceeds 15 million.
