$11.6 Million Stolen in Verus Ethereum Bridge Attack

The Verus Protocol platform's Ethereum bridge was hit by a cyberattack on Monday. Through a malformed cross-chain transfer message, hackers managed to misappropriate crypto assets worth at least $11.58 million. This was reported by Cointelegraph.com reports .

According to the security platform Blockaid, 1,625 Ethereum (ETH), 147,659 USDC, and 103.57 tBTC v2 tokens were stolen during the attack. Analysts at PeckShield confirmed the incident, noting that the stolen funds were subsequently converted into Ethereum.

According to expert analysis, the attacker exploited the lack of a source amount verification mechanism in the protocol's "checkCCEValues" function. This vulnerability allowed the hacker to pass fake import data through the system and redirect reserve funds to their own wallet.

This incident is reminiscent of major bridge attacks such as Nomad Bridge and Wormhole in 2022. At present, the Verus team has not provided an official comment on the situation, but security companies are emphasizing the need to implement rigorous verification mechanisms for blockchain bridges.
