Javokhir Sindarov secures spot in 2026 Candidates Tournament

Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov has secured a spot in the 2026 FIDE Candidates Tournament. This was reported by Chessdom, based on the results of the World Cup semifinal match.

After two draws in classical games, Sindarov defeated Nodirbek Yakubboyev in the tiebreak. In the decisive game, Sindarov, playing with black pieces, applied pressure on his opponent, forcing him into time trouble and achieving an advantage during a complex rook endgame.

The 2026 Candidates Tournament will take place in Cyprus at the Cap St Georges Hotel & Resort complex from March 25 to May 1. This tournament will determine the challenger for the reigning world champion, D. Gukesh.

The tournament participants will include World Cup medalists, Grand Swiss tournament leaders, FIDE Circuit winners, and the player with the highest average rating from August 2025 to January 2026.
