Italy Demands Sanctions Against Israeli Minister

The geopolitical crisis arising from armed conflicts and human rights violations in the Middle East has reached the doorstep of the European Union. The Italian government has officially appealed to the EU, initiating the imposition of strict economic and political sanctions against Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir for his actions that violate international law and human rights.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani issued a statement regarding this critical situation, saying:
“On behalf of the Italian leadership, I have formally requested that EU High Representative Kaja Kallas immediately include the issue of imposing sanctions against Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir on the agenda of the next meeting of EU foreign ministers. The main reason for this is his unacceptable actions against the humanitarian flotilla—using force against peace activists in international waters, as well as subjecting them to brutal persecution and discrimination. This is a gross violation of human rights at the highest level.”
Video Evidence and the Tragedy of the 'Sumud' Flotilla
What has sparked the outrage of the international community is a video posted on social media by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir himself, which shows a horrific scene. It depicts activists from the 'Sumud' (Steadfastness) flotilla, who were delivering medical and food aid to the Gaza Strip—a population on the brink of humanitarian catastrophe due to hunger and war—being forced to their knees and humiliated. The video clearly shows Ben-Gvir himself using physical force against a defenseless woman.
According to the details of this unfortunate event, the 'Sumud' ship convoy, which set sail from the Turkish port of Marmaris on May 14 with a humanitarian mission, was stopped by the Israeli Navy on May 18 in international waters without any legal justification, acting like pirates. Reliable information indicates that Israeli forces arrested 428 volunteers representing over 40 countries. The fact that 32 Italian citizens were among these detainees has infuriated Rome.
Rome's Patience Runs Out: Member of Parliament Assaulted
Deputies from Italy's influential 'Five Star Movement' party expressed their sharp and uncompromising stance on the incident:
“Thirty-two innocent Italian citizens, and most tragically, a sitting member of our parliament, were brutally beaten and subjected to physical and psychological abuse by the security forces of a country that is supposedly our friend and strategic ally on paper. At the same time, official requests sent by Rome to protect them were ignored and dismissed by Tel Aviv. This is the final point that exhausts the patience of any government that respects itself even a little and is capable of defending the sovereignty of its citizens!”
Currently, not only Italy but also powerful nations such as Canada, Turkey, Qatar, Poland, the UK, the Netherlands, Spain, and France have issued official protest notes against the Israeli minister's barbaric actions.
The influential Politico publication reports that several other EU member states are eager to impose strict punitive measures against the Israeli minister. However, the Czech government, acting as a spoiler within the EU, is openly promising to block any sanctions package against the Jewish state's ministers through its veto power.
Radical and Racist Minister: The International Community's Blacklist
Itamar Ben-Gvir, who serves as National Security Minister in Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition government, has long been known globally for his extremely radical, chauvinistic, and hate-filled statements against the Palestinian people. Specifically, he actively advocates for the expulsion of the 2.3 million Palestinians living in the Gaza Strip from their native lands to other foreign countries.
Furthermore, Ben-Gvir is the primary author and initiator of a bill introduced in the Israeli Knesset in March of this year to introduce the death penalty for Palestinians, which has been sharply condemned by the UN and the international community as a 'law based on discrimination and racism.'
It is worth noting that last year, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Norway had already imposed personal sanctions against Itamar Ben-Gvir and his associate, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. At that time, the foreign ministries of the five countries issued a joint statement: “These individuals are inciting Israelis to violence and extremist acts against civilians. Their calls are horrific and dangerous.”, they declared.
Also, in 2024, the influential US publication Axios leaked confidential information that the Biden administration had seriously discussed a plan to sanction these two hardline Israeli ministers, but the White House ultimately did not dare to do so for fear of political consequences. Regardless, Italy's firm step this time could potentially isolate Israel's political circles on the international stage.
Do you think the European Union, despite Czech opposition, will be able to satisfy Italy's demand and impose official sanctions against the Israeli minister?
