Uzbek Cinema Wins Top Prize at International Festival in Cannes

Uzbek national cinematography has demonstrated another historic and monumental success on the international stage. While the world-renowned "Cannes Film Festival" is in full swing in the famous French city of Cannes, a parallel event took place: at the 17th International Inclusive Film Festival "ENTRE DEUX CANNES" a film created by our country's representatives received the highest recognition. Filmed by our talented creators, “Qadam. Quyosh bolasi Yusuf” (Step. Yusuf, the Sun Child) won the festival's top prize.

Grand Prix winner selected from 600 films

It is worth noting that although this creative project is not part of the official selection program of the main Cannes Film Festival, it is a prestigious and independent international platform held simultaneously in the same location. This year, more than 600 applications were received from various countries across Africa, America, Europe, and Asia.

A strict and demanding jury selected only 20 of the best films for screening. In such a competitive environment, Uzbek cinema amazed international experts and judges with its deep philosophical content, high artistic expression, and poignant message, earning the highest award — Grand Prix— was deemed worthy of it.

The light of Yusuf, the Sun Child's heart

The film centers on the fate of little Yusuf, who was born with Down syndrome. Although he stands out from others, his small heart is full of infinite light, a passionate love for music, and pure faith in life. His mother, Zilola, fights tirelessly to ensure her child is not left on the margins of society and to prove to those around her that he is an equal human being. The film calls on every viewer to recognize human dignity, to be compassionate, and to embrace tolerance.

What is the "ENTRE DEUX CANNES" festival?

It is a major inclusive film week that holds a special place in world cinematography. The festival's main idea and priorities are focused on the following important goals:

  • Promotion of humanity: Supports feature, documentary, and animated films on the lives of people with disabilities, inclusion, social equality, and overcoming difficult life challenges.

  • Ending stereotypes: Aims to reduce misconceptions about people with disabilities and spread universal values through the power of cinematic art.

  • Principle of equality: Notably, the festival jury consists of both people with disabilities and able-bodied professionals working together on an equal footing.

At the end of the competition, the most skilled creators are traditionally awarded the "DOM d'Or" (Gold), "DOM d'Argent" (Silver), and "DOM de Bronze" (Bronze) prizes. The fact that our representatives took the top spot on this prestigious stage is evidence that the international prestige of our national cinema is reaching a new level.

In your opinion, how significant is the role of such poignant films in developing tolerance and inclusivity in society?
