Julian Nagelsmann confirms Manuel Neuer's return to the national team

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has officially announced that Manuel Neuer will be the team's first-choice goalkeeper for the 2026 World Cup. The Bayern Munich legend has reversed his decision to retire from international duty to represent Die Mannschaft at the tournament in North America. This is reported by Goal.com reports .
Nagelsmann has decided to rely on Neuer's wealth of experience for the upcoming World Cup hosted by the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Although the 40-year-old shot-stopper had bid farewell to the national team after Euro 2024, he is now ready to participate in his final major tournament.
While announcing the official Germany squad, Nagelsmann revealed his plans regarding the goalkeepers. "Yes, I am planning with him as the number one. Everyone knows what kind of aura Manu has. I think this decision was the right one," the coach emphasized.
This news came as a surprise blow for Hoffenheim goalkeeper Oliver Baumann. Following Marc-Andre ter Stegen's injury, Baumann was seen as the primary candidate for the starting lineup. However, with Neuer's return, he will have to settle for the backup goalkeeper role again.
Nagelsmann admitted that it was difficult to break the news to Baumann, calling him a "world-class number two." According to the coach, the coaching staff discussed Neuer's physical condition and the value he brings to the team at length before finalizing the squad.
