Our national team holds a training camp in the USA ahead of the historic World Cup
The historic moments that the entire Uzbek nation and football fans have been waiting for with anticipation are almost here. The Uzbekistan national team is entering the final preparation stage for its first-ever appearance in the FIFA World Cup final tournament. Currently training intensely under the guidance of renowned Italian expert Fabio Cannavaro, our main team will begin its historic World Cup journey on Mexican soil, but will conduct its main training camps in the United States.
Ahead of the games hosted on US pitches, our representatives will be based in the prestigious city of Atlanta. This city is proudly represented in the MLS (Major League Soccer) by the famous Atlanta United club, which is opening its doors to the Uzbek players.The American club will fully hand over its modern, state-of-the-art training facility to our compatriots starting from June 10. The facility will be at their complete disposal.
“Welcome, Uzbekistan!” — A warm message from across the ocean
In light of this joyful and historic event, the major US club addressed the Uzbekistan national team with a special statement via its official social media pages:
“Welcome, Uzbekistan! The Atlanta United training ground will become the official headquarters and main base for the Uzbekistan national team throughout the World Cup, starting Wednesday, June 10.”— reads the official statement from the American club.
Opponents in Group K and the intense match schedule
In this year's World Cup, Fabio Cannavaro's squad has been drawn into Group K and will face the following strong opponents to represent our continent with dignity:
Colombia — one of the most intense teams in South America;
Portugal — a European giant and one of the World Cup favorites;
DR Congo — a physically strong African representative capable of springing surprises.
Our national team will play its historic debut match on June 18 at the world-famous, legendary Estadio Azteca in Mexico City against the Colombian team. After that, our representatives will return to the USA and face the Portuguese stars on June 23 in Houston. This match is the center of attention for global media and millions of football fans. The final decisive group stage match will take place on June 27 at the magnificent arena in Atlanta, a city that has become dear to us, against the DR Congo national team.
The hidden history between Eldor Shomurodov and Atlanta United
There is an interesting story behind this cooperation. It turns out that in the summer of 2024, Atlanta United scouts closely monitored the performance of Uzbekistan national team captain and prolific striker Eldor Shomurodov and made an official offer to sign him.
At that time, our skilled forward was finishing his loan spell at the Italian club Cagliari and returning to his parent club, the Serie A giant Roma. Unfortunately, the transfer did not materialize due to delays in processing international documents just before the transfer window closed. Time passed, and by a twist of fate, Eldor Shomurodov is now leading his team to the very base of the club that once tried to sign him.
