Not Everyone Can Get a Green Card Anymore

USCIS has announced updated rules for obtaining a Green Card for foreigners living in the US on temporary visas. Under the new procedure, most applicants will now have to process their applications from outside the US rather than within the country.

It is reported that filing for a status adjustment while in the US will only be possible in certain exceptional cases. In other instances, foreigners on temporary visas must return to their home countries and continue the process through US consulates abroad.

The new rules also apply to students, tourists, and individuals on temporary work visas. USCIS emphasized that staying in the US on a non-immigrant visa should not automatically lead to a path for permanent residency.

According to agency representative Zach Caxler, the new system will help reduce the number of people remaining in the country illegally after their Green Card application is denied.

"From now on, individuals living temporarily in the US who wish to obtain a Green Card must return to their home countries to apply, except in emergency situations," he said.

USCIS also stated that these changes will alleviate the burden on the immigration system, allowing more focus on citizenship applications and visas for victims of violence and human trafficking.

The new policy is sparking heated debate among migrants and legal experts. Many are concerned that the Green Card process will become more complex and time-consuming, even for those living in the US legally.
