Stellantis to produce affordable electric vehicles in Italy from 2028

Stellantis has confirmed plans to produce a new type of compact and affordable electric vehicle in Italy starting in 2028. This project will be implemented under the European Commission's new "e-car" regulations, which provide manufacturers with incentives for creating small electric vehicles. This is reported by Autocar.co.uk .

These electric vehicles, falling under the new "M1E" category and measuring no more than 4.2 meters in length, will provide manufacturers with additional benefits in meeting environmental requirements in the European market. Stellantis management considers this segment the most promising for daily urban commuting.

CEO Antonio Filosa noted that there are almost no cars left in Europe priced under 15,000 euros, and the new project is aimed at filling this gap. Since affordable electric vehicles have a lower environmental impact, special regulations are planned for them.

The production process will be established at the plant in Pomigliano, Italy. Currently producing the Fiat Panda and Alfa Romeo Tonale, this plant has a production capacity of up to 300,000 vehicles per year. In the future, new compact electric vehicles under the Fiat and Citroën brands are expected to be assembled at this facility.
