The £20,000 EV Battle: Renault 5 vs Fiat Grande Panda

Don't think you've stepped into a time machine. Although the Fiat Grande Panda and Renault 5 models before you are reminiscent of the 1980s, they are actually Europe's strongest response to the influx of affordable electric vehicles from China. These two new EVs are not just about budget pricing or favorable credit terms, but projects proving that the future of the European automotive industry is linked to its past. This is reported by Autocar.co.uk .

Interestingly, both car designs feature the contribution of François Leboine — he is currently the head of Fiat's design department and previously participated in the creation of the new 5 model at Renault. These rivals target the same audience, occupy almost the same space on the road, and offer similar range on a single charge. However, as we got to know these nostalgic models closely, we discovered serious differences in their driving dynamics and design philosophy.

The Renault 5 has already won many hearts with its retro-futuristic lines. Details such as the illuminated '5' on the hood indicating the charge level and the widened wheel arches reminiscent of the legendary Group B rally car, the 5 Turbo, are stunning. This car is not just a vehicle, but a work of art that becomes a conversation starter.

But with the arrival of the new Fiat Grande Panda, the Renault had to give up its place in the spotlight. The new Fiat is larger than its predecessor and now enters the supermini segment. Its exterior clearly shows the square shapes of the original Panda model designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro. The competition between these two models will undoubtedly define the future of electric vehicles in the European market.
