BYD Dolphin G: New compact hybrid unveiled for the European market

Chinese automaker BYD has unveiled the BYD Dolphin G DM-i hatchback, the first model specifically developed for the European market. This new supermini aims to compete with both electric vehicles and traditional gasoline cars using its unique plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system. The car is expected to go on sale in the UK and European markets this autumn, according to a report by.
The new model measures 4160 mm in length and sits alongside its technically related sibling, the Dolphin Surf EV. The BYD Dolphin G will compete in the market against popular models such as the Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo, and Toyota Yaris. Unlike its rivals, this model features a full plug-in hybrid powertrain capable of covering long distances on electric power.
While BYD has not yet disclosed all details of its Super Hybrid system, it is expected to be similar to the system in the Atto 2 DM-i crossover. The system includes a 1.5-liter gasoline engine that primarily acts as a generator for the electric motor driving the front wheels. The company claims the vehicle's total range will exceed 621 miles (approximately 1000 km).
The BYD Dolphin G is planned to be produced at the company's new plant in Hungary. Company Vice President Stella Li called the European B-segment one of the most important markets and emphasized that this model will change the perception of compact cars. According to BYD's strategy, the goal is for European customers to eventually perceive the brand as a local manufacturer.
