World's first underwater data center launched in China

The world's first underwater data center powered by offshore wind energy has been launched for commercial use in China. Located near the coast of Shanghai, the project is valued at $226 million. Following construction from June to October 2025 and successful testing in February, the facility is now fully operational. This is reported by Ixbt.com .

Located at a depth of approximately 35 meters, the 24 MW facility houses nearly 2,000 servers. These include powerful GPU units designed for AI tasks, 5G technologies, and large-scale data processing. The system's main advantage is the use of seawater instead of traditional cooling systems, which efficiently dissipates heat naturally.

The project is integrated with offshore wind farms, providing the center with renewable energy and reducing the load on the general power grid. However, the technology faces unique challenges: equipment must be resistant to high pressure and corrosion. Therefore, the system is built on hermetic modules and high-level backup systems with remote control capabilities.
