Uzbekistan to build nearly 3,000 micro-hydropower plants in two years

Uzbekistan to build nearly 3,000 micro-hydropower plants in two years
In order to sustainably meet the growing demand for electricity by the population and economy of Uzbekistan, comprehensive reforms are being implemented in the energy sector. This was detailed in the new information presented to the President.

Electricity consumption increased by 30% in 5 years
Over the past five years, electricity production in Uzbekistan has reached 81.5 billion kWh - this is a 30% increase.

At the same time, according to estimates, by 2035, electricity demand is expected to increase to 121 billion kWh.

These figures indicate the need to shape energy policy with a long-term perspective. Therefore, balanced development is necessary in all directions - traditional and "green" sources.

"Green energy" - a strategic direction
The goal set by the President:
To increase the share of renewable sources in electricity to 54 percent by 2030.

In this regard, the main attention is paid to the following:
- Hydropower (hydroelectric power plants, micro-hydroelectric power plants).
- Wind and solar power plants.
- Nuclear power.

2,983 micro-hydroelectric power plants: big results, small format
In 2025–2026:
- 2,983 micro-hydroelectric power plants will be built.
- Total capacity: 167 megawatts.
- 500 million kWh of clean energy will be produced.
- 151 million m³ of natural gas will be saved.
- 1,200 people will be employed in construction, 520 in permanent jobs.

In 2024 alone:
- 1,185 micro-hydroelectric power plants are planned to be built.
- Most of them will be implemented by private entrepreneurs.

Nuclear energy: towards a safe and sustainable future
A project to build a small-capacity nuclear power plant as a new energy source is being developed.

Each stage — from design to construction — will be carried out under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

In addition:
- The most advanced technologies and safety standards will be introduced.
- Issues of training specialized specialists and technology transfer are being considered.

Efficiency and reliability in electricity supply are important
The President demanded that all plans be assessed on the basis of this responsibility:

- Timely commissioning of infrastructure.
- Providing the economy and population with uninterrupted electricity.
- Creating jobs and improving the investment climate.
