3 Big Mistakes People Make When Washing Their Hair

Do your hair get greasy quickly and your ends stay dry? Maybe the problem isn’t the shampoo itself, but how you use it. Spanish trichologist Dr. Aina Salom has identified three major mistakes that people commonly make when washing their hair. These tips can help improve the condition of your hair.

1. Applying shampoo incorrectly
Many people tend to apply shampoo all over their hair and lather it up. In fact, shampoo should only be applied to the scalp — the root area. According to Dr. Salom, the purpose of shampoo is to clean dirt and oil from the scalp. Overusing shampoo can dry out the ends and worsen their condition. It's enough to massage the shampoo into the roots, letting the foam naturally rinse through the length of the hair with running water.

2. Washing with very hot water
Especially in Uzbekistan during winter, many people prefer to wash their hair with warmer, even hot water. But this habit is damaging to the hair. Hot water not only harms the hair structure, but also activates the sebaceous glands — resulting in hair becoming greasy quickly and looking dirty even shortly after washing. That’s why it is recommended to wash hair with lukewarm water, close to body temperature.

3. Skipping the “second wash” method
If your goal is to have clean, lightweight, and voluminous hair, using the "double shampooing" method is very effective. The first wash removes dirt and product buildup. The second wash revitalizes the scalp and creates a good base for conditioner and care products. This method is especially helpful for people whose roots get oily quickly.
