Japan sets another record for women’s life expectancy

Japan has once again renewed its record for life expectancy, NHK TV channel reported. According to the Ministry of Health, in 2024, the average life expectancy for women in the country reached 87.13 years, making Japan the world leader in this indicator for the 40th time. For men, the average figure was 81.09 years.

Compared to 2023, the figures remained almost unchanged — life expectancy for women increased by only 0.01 percent, while for men, it remained at the previous year’s level. Although this is a 40-year leadership for Japanese women, Japanese men only rank sixth in the world, lagging behind countries such as Sweden, Switzerland, and Norway.

According to the ministry, over the past year, deaths from cardiovascular diseases have decreased, and more people in the country are dying from natural causes. It is also noted that the growth of expected life expectancy in Japan has slowed down due to deaths caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, these indicators began to stabilize.

Japan’s leadership in life expectancy is attracting great interest worldwide. The healthy lifestyle, the development of medicine, and the preventive measures against diseases in the country are important factors in achieving these results. The public evaluates these annual records as a positive trend and new hope.
