Why did UEFA fine Barcelona, Chelsea, and Roma?

Financial discipline has once again become a key issue in European football. According to official sources, UEFA imposed significant fines on five top clubs based on their 2024 financial results. The reason for these penalties is that the clubs spent more on their squad than allowed relative to their income.

UEFA's Financial Fair Play rules strictly monitor clubs' spending. In 2024, the spending limit was set at 80% of a club's annual revenue. Over the next two seasons, this limit will tighten—to 70% beginning in 2025/26. This measure aims to ensure financial stability and fair competition.

According to UEFA data, five clubs exceeded this limit, spending between 80% and 90% of their income, significantly violating Fair Play rules.

As a result, the following fines were imposed:
- Chelsea – €20 million
- Barcelona – €15 million
- Lyon – €12 million
- Aston Villa – €11 million
- Roma – €3 million

UEFA emphasized that each club's penalty was determined individually, with no exceptions.

Experts believe this decision is intended to strengthen financial discipline in European football and encourage clubs to adopt responsible spending policies. Similar rules and penalties are expected to increase in future seasons.
