Liability established for odometer tampering

Liability established for odometer tampering

At the latest plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis, a law aimed at amending the Code of Administrative Responsibility was discussed. This document is significant for further improving the administrative liability system, protecting consumer rights, and strengthening the interests of minors.

The law adds a new Article 178² to the Code. According to it, administrative liability is established for failing to inform a buyer that the odometer, which indicates the distance traveled by a vehicle, has been altered or replaced.

This provision primarily serves to ensure transparency in the automotive market. In the trade of used cars, altering odometer readings or concealing the actual mileage can mislead the buyer and harm their financial interests.

Senators emphasized that this change is aimed at curbing dishonest practices in the car market, ensuring fairness in relations between sellers and buyers, and guaranteeing the consumer's right to receive accurate information.

Simply put, if information about a car's mileage is hidden during a sale or if the buyer is not informed about odometer tampering, this will lead to legal liability. This may reduce sales of cars that look good on the outside but hide significant issues.

Another important issue within the law is the revision of the procedure for reducing the term of deprivation of the right to drive a vehicle or to hunt. Such leniency will now be decided only based on specific conditions set by the court.

If a person has previously used this leniency or commits another offense during the penalty period, such a privilege will not be applied to them. This procedure serves to increase the effectiveness of administrative penalties and prevent disregard for the law.

At the end of the discussions, the senators approved the law. Once these changes are implemented, consumer rights protection will be further strengthened, and transparency and trust in car sales will increase.

In short, "playing" with the odometer is no longer a minor trick, but a situation leading to administrative liability. Selling a car? Tell the truth. Buying a car? Check the data. Trust and the law must work equally in the market.
