ICC Denies Reports of Arrest Warrants for Israeli Officials

Sensational reports regarding the Israeli leadership have emerged on the global political stage and within the sphere of international law. Information suggesting that the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, had filed requests for the arrest of several high-ranking Israeli government officials caught the attention of the media.

Who are the warrants allegedly requested against?

The influential Haaretz newspaper, citing diplomatic sources, wrote that this time the matter concerns Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Furthermore, it was stated that similar measures are expected against three other officials: Settlement Affairs Minister Orit Strok and two high-ranking military officers.

What are the accusations related to?

The investigation conducted by the ICC is primarily focused on the following serious issues:

  • Settlement Policy: Illegal expansion of Jewish settlements in the West Bank of the Jordan River;

  • Settler Violence: Instances of the use of force against the local population;

  • Demarcation: Systematic transfer of the population into occupied territories.

According to international law, such actions can be classified as crimes against humanity and war crimes. It should be recalled that in November 2024, the court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for alleged crimes during military operations in Gaza. The new requests were seen as a logical continuation of that process.

Secrecy tactics and unexpected statement

Eliav Lieblich, a professor of international law at Tel Aviv University, explains that under the Rome Statute, the court is not required to notify suspects in advance. On the contrary, keeping documents confidential significantly increases the chances of apprehending the accused when they travel abroad. In fact, the renowned The Wall Street Journal had already reported back in May 2025 that Karim Khan was preparing case files specifically against Smotrich and Ben-Gvir.

However, after reports of these "new warrants" flooded the world press, the International Criminal Court was forced to issue an official response. Court spokesperson Orian Maye stated that the information circulating in Israeli media is inaccurate. According to her, no new arrest warrants have been issued against Israeli officials within the framework of the Palestine case at this time.

Do you think the decisions of international judicial bodies can influence the stabilization of the political situation in the Middle East?
