When should you teach a child to write? The truth about the optimal age

A question that worries many parents is: at what age is it right to start teaching a child to write? Some believe it should be started early, while others are in favor of not rushing the child.

According to experts, the optimal age to start teaching a child to write is usually 5–6 years old. During this period, the child's fine motor skills, hand movements, and attention are sufficiently developed. Therefore, they are ready to hold a pen correctly and write letters.

However, this does not mean that no preparation should be done at 3–4 years old. On the contrary, at this age, it is very useful to develop hand muscles through exercises such as drawing, coloring, and sketching shapes. This helps them master writing more easily later on.

The important thing is not to force the child. If they are not ready yet, their interest in writing may fade. Teaching through play and interesting methods yields much more effective results.

In conclusion, every child develops individually. But as a general recommendation, 5–6 years old is considered the most convenient and effective period to start writing.
