“She Became a Star Not Just in India but a Global Beauty” — The Story of Aishwarya Rai

“She Became a Star Not Just in India but a Global Beauty” — The Story of Aishwarya Rai

They say that when the famous model Aishwarya Rai submitted her application to the “Miss India” beauty contest, 20 candidates, seeing such a beauty, realized that they had no chance and refused to participate. Today Aishwarya is not only a major star of Indian but also Western cinema, and also the absolute holder of the title “Most Successful Miss World” in the contest’s history.

Aishwarya’s Entry into the Show Business World: Hope and Ambition
It was hard to imagine Aishwarya entering the show business world because her family was far from the cinema world.

Childhood and Education: A Smart Girl Who Dreamed of Becoming a Doctor
Aishwarya Rai was born on November 1, 1973, in the family of Indian Army biologist Krishnaraj Rai and housewife Vrinda. The family was small: son Aditya (now an officer in the naval fleet) and daughter Aishwarya.

The Rai lineage traces back to South India, the city of Mangalore in the state of Karnataka. From childhood Aishwarya spoke freely in three languages — English, Hindi, and her mother tongue Tulu. Shortly after her birth, in the mid‑1970s, the family moved to Mumbai due to her father’s work.

Friends and relatives remember that Aishwarya was always top in her studies and loved classical dance. In her early interviews she said:
“I was always first in class. Only once, when I was in the 7th grade, I became third. I remember how hard it hit me. Then I realized how important it was to be the best. After that I did not sleep for days, studied nights, and eventually became first in all subjects again.”

From Modeling to the World Stage: The Path to Stardom
Rumors about her beauty spread at lightning speed. Classmates and teachers still remember boys standing in line at the college gate just to see the blue‑eyed beauty Aishwarya once.

Her college teacher advised her to make a portfolio. This was long before social networks existed. Photographers Gautam Rajadhyaksha and Farrokh Chothia elevated her from a regular student to a professional model.

In 1993, a Pepsi commercial with Aamir Khan completely changed her career. After that, she began appearing in multilingual commercials in southern regions. On her friends’ advice, she submitted documents for the “Miss India — 1994” contest. The withdrawal of 20 girls from participation was the most sensational event of that time.

Historic Victory and Family Happiness
In the competition Aishwarya was leading, but in the final she lost to Sushmita Sen and took second place. At the same time, she went straight to the “Miss World — 1994” contest and won the crown with a record score. Twenty years later, in 2014, organizers declared her the “Most Successful Miss World” in history.

After the victory, she stepped into cinema. In 1997 she debuted in Mani Ratnam’s film “Duet” (Iruvar). Soon she became one of the most sought‑after actresses in Bollywood, and ten years later appeared on Hollywood screens too.

In 2007 she married Abhishek Bachchan. By 2026, their marriage became a strong and exemplary family bond lasting 19 years.

Today’s Career
After becoming a mother, Aishwarya began to appear less often on screens. One of her largest recent projects was the epic drama “Ponniyin Selvan” filmed by Mani Ratnam (2022–2023).

The film earned high critical acclaim and became one of the highest grossing in Tamil cinema history. Today Aishwarya Rai remains not only the face of Indian cinema but also a symbol of beauty and elegance worldwide.
