Childhood and Education: A Smart Girl Who Dreamed of Becoming a Doctor
Aishwarya Rai was born on November 1, 1973, in the family of Indian Army biologist Krishnaraj Rai and housewife Vrinda. The family was small: son Aditya (now an officer in the naval fleet) and daughter Aishwarya.
The Rai lineage traces back to South India, the city of Mangalore in the state of Karnataka. From childhood Aishwarya spoke freely in three languages — English, Hindi, and her mother tongue Tulu. Shortly after her birth, in the mid‑1970s, the family moved to Mumbai due to her father’s work.
Friends and relatives remember that Aishwarya was always top in her studies and loved classical dance. In her early interviews she said:
“I was always first in class. Only once, when I was in the 7th grade, I became third. I remember how hard it hit me. Then I realized how important it was to be the best. After that I did not sleep for days, studied nights, and eventually became first in all subjects again.”

In 1993, a Pepsi commercial with Aamir Khan completely changed her career. After that, she began appearing in multilingual commercials in southern regions. In the competition Aishwarya was leading, but in the final she lost to Sushmita Sen and took second place. At the same time, she went straight to the “Miss World — 1994” contest and won the crown with a record score.
