Shahriyor Dodojonov is blind, he cannot see the world, but he hears it in the sounds of maqom. Despite health restrictions, he is a teacher and now teaches children traditional art.

“Parents bring their children and think: what kind of lessons will I teach? Then, once or twice, they come in and see my teaching activities, and they are happy. They really give me good feedback, saying that I teach well,” he says.

Since childhood, Shahriyor dreamed of becoming an artist, and his visual impairment was not an obstacle for him. With the support of his family, teachers, and classmates, he graduated from the Uzbek State Institute of Arts and Culture, and now teaches maqom to children in a small town in the Syrdarya region.

“I think that if we beautifully and beautifully sing our own maqom songs, traditional songs left by our teachers, rather than listening to foreign songs, then of course young people will listen to us,” says Dodozhonov.

He treats each student individually and does not single anyone out, despite the complexity of the maqom performance.

“I think that a teacher never has the right to choose a student, because students come. They have the right to choose a teacher. But a teacher establishes a relationship with a student who comes and gives the first lesson. If that child has the ability, he will take him to the end. Or he will have to try himself in another field,” he says.

In an interview with Sputnik Uzbekistan, Shahriyor talks about how he overcame difficulties in his life, why it is important to preserve traditional art, and how he approaches his students.
