The fastest land mammal is the cheetah. It can run at a speed of up to 114 km/h, but in practice, when chasing prey, its speed usually ranges around 80–100 km/h. The cheetah can accelerate to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds, but it can maintain such high speed only over a short distance.
Among the fastest animals, the pronghorn and the springbok stand out. The pronghorn falls behind the cheetah over short distances but can maintain high speed for a long period. Its recorded maximum speed is 88.5 km/h. The springbok shows a similar result and can also sustain high speed for a long time.
According to some data, lions, especially females, can reach speeds up to 80 km/h. However, like the cheetah, they can maintain such speed only for a short time. Gnus and harna antelopes also have speeds of approximately 80 km/h.
Some dog breeds are also among the fastest animals. For example, the greyhound (English greyhound) can run at a speed of up to 67.3 km/h, making it one of the fastest dog breeds.
The speed of horses depends on the breed: racehorses reach speeds of about 70.76 km/h (record in 2008), and American Quarter Horses can accelerate up to 88 km/h.
