The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, has been hit by a brutal attack involving missiles and drones launched by Russian forces. At least 21 civilians, including three children, lost their lives in this tragic event. The city administration has declared May 15 a day of mourning in the capital.
Casualties and rescue operations
According to the latest data from Ukraine's State Emergency Service, at least 47 people sustained injuries of varying severity. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that 27 of the wounded have been hospitalized in serious condition.
The most severe situation occurred in the Darnytskyi district, where a section of a high-rise apartment building completely collapsed. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of rescuers, 28 people were pulled alive from the rubble.
Capital in mourning: Restrictions and recommendations
On May 15, the day of mourning, flags will be flown at half-mast at all government institutions in Kyiv. The city administration has also recommended that private businesses and organizations join in the mourning. All entertainment events and concerts across the city have been canceled.
International relations and diplomatic steps
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha strongly condemned the mass attack and initiated a call for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council. He emphasized that such actions targeting civilians and humanitarian workers must not go unanswered by the international community.
Geography of the attack and air defense
The attack was not limited to the capital. The Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that a total of 892 drones were launched by Russia within 24 hours. While 710 were destroyed by air defense systems, some reached their targets.
Various districts of Kyiv: Fires broke out in the Dnipro, Shevchenko, Solomianskyi, and Obolon districts, causing damage to business centers and vehicles.
Situation in the regions: Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipropetrovsk, and several other regions were also targeted.
First attack: For the first time since the start of the war, the city of Uzhhorod, the center of the Zakarpattia region, was also struck.
Today, security measures have been strengthened across almost all regions of Ukraine, and debris clearing operations are ongoing.
