November 16, 2025. In the 9th round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification stage, the Austrian national team secured a 2-0 victory against Cyprus.
The match, held in Limassol, saw Ralf Rangnick's team solidify their lead at the top of Group H, edging closer to securing a spot in the championship. From the opening minutes, the visitors took control of the game, maintaining possession in the opponent's half.
The Cypriots primarily relied on counterattacks led by Tsionis from the left wing. In the 17th minute, a critical moment arose for the hosts.
Following a cross from Schmid, Baumgartner was fouled by Correia in the penalty area, leading the referee to award a penalty. Marko Arnautovic confidently converted the penalty—goalkeeper Fabiano failed to reach the ball.
Austria continued to apply pressure through wing play and set pieces, while Cyprus struggled to gain control of the game. In the second half, the hosts played more assertively, attempting more deliveries into the opposition’s penalty area.
However, Danso and his teammates were solid in aerial duels and supported each other effectively. In the 55th minute, Austria capitalized on an error in Cyprus's central defense.
Danso regained possession and quickly passed to Arnautovic, sparking a counterattack. Arnautovic entered the penalty area from the right wing, outmaneuvered goalkeeper Fabiano, and struck the ball into the far corner.
Afterward, the visitors maintained control of the game, while Cyprus's set-piece efforts posed no significant threat. As a result, Austria secured a well-deserved victory, maintaining their dominance in the group.
