Trump has requested a record $1.5 trillion military budget

The administration of US President Donald Trump has asked Congress to allocate $1.5 trillion for the defense sector for the 2027 fiscal year. This amount is recorded as the largest financial indicator in the country's history, The New York Times reported on April 3.
Trump explained these sharp expenditures by the ongoing conflict with Iran and the need to restore depleted weapons stocks. According to the president, the country's security takes precedence over social programs. Therefore, he proposed to shift the costs of healthcare and preschool education to the states.
The bulk of the budget - $1.1 trillion - is planned to be allocated through the standard budget process, and another $350 billion through the budget coordination mechanism. At the same time, the White House is also proposing to cut domestic spending by $73 billion. The cuts will affect climate, housing and education, but will increase the funding of law enforcement agencies - the Justice Department's budget could increase by 13 percent, as well as additional funds for border security and deportation.
The budget request has been met with skepticism and criticism from representatives of both parties. The main objection is that the administration has limited congressional oversight over the war with Iran. The war is in its fifth week, and similar proposals for social spending cuts were rejected in the 2026 budget debate.
Analysts warn that if this plan is implemented, the national debt could increase by tens of trillions of dollars over the next decade. The full text of the budget request has not yet been released.
Meanwhile, over the past three weeks, US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran have reportedly crippled the fleet and air defenses, destroying dozens of aircraft and missiles. Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and key members of the security establishment were killed on the first day of the attacks.
Nevertheless, the regime remains intact, and Tehran is demanding guarantees for a ceasefire, expressing its readiness to continue the resistance. This is a strategic move for the US and the international community and an important signal for future diplomatic processes.
