Israeli Minister's Video Sparks Major International Controversy

Amid rising political tensions in the Middle East, a major diplomatic crisis has erupted between Tel Aviv and its closest Western allies due to the actions of an Israeli government member. On May 20 a number of European and Western nations summoned Israeli ambassadors to their foreign ministries due to this unpleasant situation.

Specifically, Italy, France, Canada, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Portugal issued formal protests to Israeli ambassadors, while the Spanish government, lacking an Israeli ambassador in Madrid, summoned the country's chargé d'affaires to the foreign ministry to demand an explanation.

A humiliating video that exploded on social media

The controversy, which sparked a wave of outrage worldwide, was caused by a video posted on X (formerly Twitter) by Israel's Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir. The footage shows the “Sumud” flotillastopped at sea by the Israeli Navy, with human rights activists in a dire state at the port of Ashdod.

The detained activists are shown kneeling on the ground, hands cuffed behind their backs, with their heads bowed. Worst of all, the minister walked proudly among these helpless people, holding an Israeli flag, and shouted in Hebrew: “Welcome to Israel, we are the masters here!” Additionally, Ben-Gvir openly labeled these peace activists as “supporters of terrorism” in his post.

Rain of protests: EU and European ministers take a firm stance

Such harsh treatment of international activists was strongly condemned by the European Union and leaders of several countries.

  • Poland: Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski criticized the situation on X, noting that Polish citizens might be among those detained: “They have no right to treat Polish citizens who have committed no crime in this way. In the democratic world, humiliating prisoners or detainees in this manner is absolutely unacceptable”.

  • European Union: EU foreign policy spokesperson Anuar El-Anuni called the incident “inhumane and completely unacceptable,” reminding that the dignity of every detainee and international law must be protected.

  • Kaja Kallas: The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy also described the actions as “degrading,” stating that Ben-Gvir’s behavior is completely inappropriate for a high-ranking official of a democratic state.

  • Germany: Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul emphasized that the minister’s show contradicts the universal values that Berlin and Tel Aviv jointly defend.

  • USA: Although U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee called the flotilla participants' actions a “foolish stunt,” he regretfully noted that Minister Ben-Gvir, through his actions, actually undermined the prestige and dignity of his own nation.

Internal conflict within Israeli leadership

This shameful video caused serious internal debate not only abroad but also within the Israeli government itself. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused his colleague Ben-Gvir of staging a “shameful show that caused immense damage to state interests” in the eyes of the global community.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, while responding to the situation, defended Israel's legal right to stop any “provocative flotillas” heading toward the Gaza Strip. However, he admitted that the minister’s harsh treatment of the prisoners “does not align with the true values of the State of Israel.”

What was the “Sumud” flotilla?

The “Sumud” flotilla, aimed at humanitarian aid and protest, set sail from the Turkish port of Marmaris on May 14 Four days later, on May 18 the Israeli Navy stopped these ships approximately 250 nautical miles from the Gaza coast in international waters using force.

According to official information from the organizers, there were 428 peace activists and volunteers from over 40 countries on board, all of whom were arrested. The Israeli leadership views such maritime voyages as an attempt to break the military blockade around the Gaza Strip and direct support for the Hamas movement.

How much of a blow do you think this action by the Israeli minister against international activists will deal to Israel's diplomatic standing on the world stage?
