Ways to Clean a Washing Machine Drum

Over time, washing machine drums accumulate hard water deposits, detergent residues, and coatings. This can lead to unpleasant odors, stains on clothing, and reduced efficiency of the appliance.

Regular cleaning of the drum helps maintain its freshness, reduces wear on parts, and prevents malfunctions. A variety of methods can be used to properly clean the drum of a washing machine.

One of the most common methods is using citric acid. Add 100–200 grams of citric acid to the detergent compartment and run an empty wash cycle at 60–90°C.

These products do not require precise dosing and are safe for all types of components. Such agents are typically used in standard wash cycles at high temperatures.

Modern washing machines are equipped with special cleaning modes for the drum. For instance, LG offers a Tub Clean function that automatically sets the optimal temperature and cycle duration.

Similarly, Samsung provides Drum Clean or Eco Drum Clean modes. These modes work without detergents and extend the machine's lifespan.

If unpleasant odors persist after cleaning, it may indicate an issue with internal components. One of the most commonly affected parts is the rubber gasket.

It is recommended to clean the gasket with a vinegar or soda solution. Additionally, the detergent compartment should be removed, washed with warm water, and dried.

Another important component is the filter, which collects lint, hair, and small objects.

Regular cleaning of the filter ensures proper water drainage and eliminates bad odors. After cleaning, all components should be stored dry, and the machine door should be left open.

Preventive measures include wiping the drum and gasket dry after each wash, keeping the door open, using appropriate amounts of detergent, and running a high-temperature cycle once a month. Additionally, installing a water softener filter or magnetic softener can help reduce water hardness.
