The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, noted during a session of the Samarkand Region Council of People's Deputies that the region's population has surpassed 4.3 million. One of the largest districts in the region is Urgut, where more than 600,000 people reside.
According to the head of state, Urgut District, which for many years was a leader in agriculture within the region, has in recent years been transitioning into an industrial center. The establishment of the Urgut Free Economic Zone has significantly contributed to this transformation.
A total of 74 projects worth $860 million have been implemented in this area, turning it into a major industrial hub. The growth of manufacturing has also driven the development of trade and service sectors.
Currently, Urgut District ranks third in the region for industrial output, and fourth in service sector development. Additionally, a significant project—a 55-kilometer-long railway line—was inaugurated in the district today.
Its full electrification is expected to be completed next year. This new infrastructure will not only improve living conditions in Urgut District but also create additional opportunities in the industrial, agricultural, and service sectors.
