International Water Week to be Held in Tashkent

International Water Week is scheduled to be held in Tashkent in March next year. Representatives from regional countries and international organizations are expected to discuss the efficient use of water resources and the implementation of “green” technologies at this forum.

On December 15, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev was briefed about the upcoming event. The head of state instructed that the forum be organized at the highest level and called for thorough preparations for an international forum on water-saving technologies in the Karakalpakstan region next year.

The meeting also addressed measures to reduce energy consumption in water management. Currently, there are 274 pumping stations operating in Karakalpakstan, irrigating over 185,000 hectares of land.

However, over half of these pumps are outdated, consuming two to three times more electricity compared to modern pumps. For instance, after replacing one pump in the Kegeyli district, electricity usage was halved.

Plans are now in place to gradually replace 276 pumps with energy-efficient ones. This transition is expected to save 25 billion soums annually and pay for itself within 14 months.

Officials emphasized the importance of supporting local manufacturers. Additionally, details about the Tashkent Institute of Irrigation were shared.

The university has 8,682 students and 571 faculty members. It secured first place in Uzbekistan in the THE World University Rankings 2026 and is ranked among the top 500 universities globally.

Future plans for the institute include creating a digital platform to analyze climate change, developing expertise in working with satellite data, and launching an internationally recognized master's program in "Water Diplomacy."
