German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has criticized Donald Trump's demand that the United States supply rare metals in exchange for financial aid to Ukraine. The German politician spoke about this on Monday evening, February 3, after an informal European Union defense summit in Brussels.
Scholz: Ukraine's resources are needed by the country itself
"The country's resources will have to be used to finance everything that will be needed after the war," Scholz was quoted as saying by Reuters. According to him, using the money now to support defense would be "very selfish."
Scholz stressed that Ukraine will need a strong army in the future, as well as funds to rebuild the country. "Given the enormous destruction that is taking place in Ukraine, these are huge tasks. That's why I think it would be good to use Ukraine's resources for the future," the German Chancellor added.
Trump: Rare metals in exchange for aid
Earlier, Donald Trump said that Ukraine would continue to receive aid if it promised to supply the United States with rare metals. "We want to make an agreement with Ukraine, where they will provide what we provide with their rare metals and other products," he said.
When asked whether Trump wanted Kiev to supply Washington with resources, the US president answered in the affirmative, stressing that he wanted to "have guarantees" for the supply of rare metals, and Ukraine has already shown that it is ready for this. According to the head of the White House, he wants Kiev to pay Washington "almost $ 300 billion" in compensation for the assistance provided. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
