US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that he intends to impose tariffs on products imported from the European Union in the future "without a doubt".
"Am I going to impose tariffs? Am I going to tell you the truth or am I going to give you a political answer? Of course I will. The European Union has treated us very badly," Trump said. The politician added that he would take "very serious measures" against the EU.
According to the Republican, the EU is treating the United States "very unfairly" on the issue of value-added tax.
"They have high taxes. They don't accept our agricultural products or our cars, but they send us millions of cars," the politician said.
According to the European Commission, the volume of trade in goods and services between the EU and the US in 2023 exceeded 1.5 trillion euros. Oil, crude oil, medicines, pharmaceuticals and natural gas are the bloc's most popular imports from the US.
Trump also has other complaints about the EU. In particular, the politician is dissatisfied with the EU's licensing procedure - according to him, "it took five or six years to get a major project approved." He also criticized Brussels for fines and antitrust investigations against Apple, Google and other American corporations.
The Republican has repeatedly threatened to impose new tariffs of 10-20 percent on all imports from the European Union.
"To prevent this, Brussels should buy more American oil and gas," Trump believes.
The European Commission has said it is ready to respond "in a proportionate manner," while EU President Ursula von der Leyen has called for a "race to the bottom" amid the threat of a trade war.
Trump imposes tariffs on 3 countries
The United States will impose tariffs on goods imported from Canada, China and Mexico. President Donald Trump signed the order on February 1. He explained this decision by the threat of illegal immigration and drug smuggling. In response, China warned the United States of the start of a trade war.
China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that there would be no winners in a "trade or tariff war."
"The additional 10 percent tariff is bound to affect and harm bilateral cooperation in combating drug trafficking between the two countries," the ministry said in a statement.
China said it "firmly rejects the new tariffs" and will "take appropriate countermeasures" to firmly safeguard its rights and interests. China now intends to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the United States. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
