Volodymyr Zelensky said that nuclear weapons could be a sufficient security guarantee if Ukraine is not accepted into NATO. He noted this in an interview with British journalist Piers Morgan. Excerpts of the interview appeared on Morgan's social media pages on February 4.
The journalist asked Zelensky what security guarantees Ukraine is considering to deter Vladimir Putin from new attacks.
According to Zelensky, if Ukraine's accession to NATO is delayed for years or decades, then an "absolutely fair question" arises:
"What will always protect us from this evil along the way? What kind of aid package? What kind of missiles? Will they give us nuclear weapons? Then give us nuclear weapons. Will we be given enough missiles to stop Russia? I don't believe it, but I think it would help.
Otherwise, what missiles can intercept Russian nuclear missiles? This is a rhetorical question. So let's do this: give us back our nuclear weapons, give us missile complexes, our partners will help finance a million-strong army, deploy your contingent in our regions where we want stability, where people will feel safe," Zelensky said.
Zelensky added that if Ukraine is not a member of NATO, "Putin must completely leave the country," after which Kiev will raise the issue of financial compensation for all losses.
"He [Putin] attacked because he was afraid that we might become a member of NATO. Well, we are not a member of NATO - give us back our lands. This should be considered in the same way," the Ukrainian president said.
Ukraine renounced its nuclear weapons under the Budapest Memorandum, signed in December 1994. The document guaranteed Ukraine's territorial integrity in exchange for the renunciation of nuclear weapons. The document was signed by Russia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
