For the first time in Ukraine, long-range FPV drones controlled via optical fiber were tested. These drones are capable of covering a distance of several tens of kilometers, writes Brave1.

During the test, more than 15 manufacturers of unmanned aerial vehicles tested their products at the test site. During the tests, the drones covered a distance of more than 20 km without obstacles and simulated an approach to the target.

Previously, the flight range of such drones was only 5-10 km, but now solutions capable of hitting targets at a distance of more than 20 km have been successfully tested.

The advantages of fiber-optic FPV drones are as follows:
  • Completely immune to electronic warfare - such drones can perform combat missions despite electronic jamming;
  • Invisible to the enemy - since they do not emit radio waves, radio reconnaissance equipment cannot detect them;
  • High-quality communication - allows for stable and accurate transmission of video images even from long distances;
  • The radio horizon is not affected - since it does not depend on a radio signal, drones can be effectively controlled even at long distances.

The event also featured manufacturers of seven types of ground robotic complexes (GRCs) controlled via optical fiber, demonstrating test control.

“Optical fiber is a game-changer in communications and electronic warfare, as it provides stable communication that electronic warfare (EW) cannot affect. "We are very interested in the introduction of fiber optics, because it will allow our EURKs to operate at long distances and more effectively destroy the enemy," said Captain Oleksandr Yabchanka, head of the robotic systems service of the Da Vinci Wolves battalion.

A fiber-optic drone is an FPV drone controlled by an operator, with which communication is carried out via a fiber-optic cable. The video signal is also transmitted via this cable. Thus, such a drone does not use radio frequencies to control it and is not affected by electronic warfare means.
