Google was sued for collecting children’s personal data through YouTube without parental consent. The company agreed to settle the case by paying $30 million.
The lawsuit stated that YouTube attracted children with cartoons and songs, collected their data, and used it for advertising. This was done without the parents’ permission.
In fact, Google had already paid a $170 million fine in 2019 for similar accusations. But parents emphasized that the company once again continued to break the law.
The court dismissed charges against some major content producers. Nevertheless, the settlement covers children under 13 who used YouTube between 2013 and 2020.
According to experts, parents joining the lawsuit could receive $30–$60 on behalf of their children. Google, without admitting the accusations, chose to pay money to close the case.
