In the United Kingdom, serious changes to the driving rules and the road safety system are planned. According to the new requirements, additional restrictions will be imposed on drivers over 70 years old. In particular, they will be obliged to undergo an eyesight test once every three years. If the result of the test is considered unsatisfactory, such drivers will no longer be allowed to drive a car. This was reported by Telegraph.
According to the information, this new road safety strategy includes not only restrictions related to vision but also a number of other measures. For example, the alcohol limit for driving will be significantly reduced, and drivers who have passengers not wearing seat belts will directly receive penalty points. These legislative innovations are expected to come into effect this autumn.
Experts emphasize that such measures are mainly introduced in order to reduce the number of road accidents and deaths caused by drivers with weakened eyesight. At the same time, within the framework of the new system, the following important changes are planned:
— The alcohol limit for driving will be reduced to the level of Scotland, that is, from 35 micrograms to 22 micrograms.
— If there is a passenger in the car not wearing a seat belt, the driver will receive penalty points.
— Additional medical examinations will be introduced to detect serious diseases such as dementia.
It is also being considered to impose stricter punishments for drivers who drive without insurance, as well as to solve the problem of license plates that cannot be recognized by cameras.
The Ministry of Transport emphasizes that these plans were developed against the background of the increasing number of accidents and deaths on the country’s roads. The main purpose of the new rules is to ensure road safety, take strict measures against violations, and strengthen order on the roads.
According to experts, in the near future these restrictions may raise the culture of road traffic not only in large cities but also throughout the whole country.
