A Russian airstrike on a prison located in southeastern Ukraine’s Zaporijjiya region has killed at least 16 people and injured more than 30 others, Ukrainian officials reported on July 29.
According to regional head Ivan Fedorov, the overnight airstrikes damaged not only prison buildings but also surrounding residential areas. Russia used high-explosive aerial bombs in the attack.
The head of the Ukrainian president's administration, Andriy Yermak, described the strikes as “another war crime.”
Ukraine’s human rights commissioner called the attack on detained persons a gross violation of international humanitarian law. “Even those in detention are not deprived of the right to life and protection,” the statement read.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump urged Russia to agree to a ceasefire, warning that new sanctions would be imposed if a deal was not reached within 10–12 days. Speaking to reporters during a visit to Scotland, Trump said: “If the outcome is already known, there’s no reason to wait.”
Earlier in July, Trump had issued a 50-day ultimatum to Russia, but the warning did not stop Moscow’s strikes.
At the same time, Ukraine carried out drone attacks on southern Russian regions. In the town of Salsk in Rostov region, one person was killed in their car following a drone strike. In Belgorod region, another driver was killed and his wife was wounded.
