Disney to Invest $1 Billion in OpenAI

Disney invests $1 billion in OpenAI
The Walt Disney media corporation will invest $1 billion in OpenAI's equity capital. The two parties announced their three-year partnership on their official websites.

The company will receive warrants (certificates) that grant the right to acquire additional shares in OpenAI, which is developing the ChatGPT chatbot and a generative video creation model called Sora. Additionally, Disney will grant Sora permission to use over 200 characters from its Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars franchises.

This list includes Mickey Mouse, Cinderella, Simba, Lilo, and Stitch. Disney will become the first major partner in the content licensing area for Sora.

According to the agreement, Sora will be able to generate videos featuring animated characters from Disney Studios in response to user requests. In return, the Disney corporation will have the right to integrate these videos into its Disney+ platform.

At the same time, the agreement does not extend to the use of actors' physical appearances or voices—it will be limited solely to animated forms.
